Snowpack

In the west and north, avalanches may still be triggered, particularly in near-surface layers of the snowpack. The number of avalanche prone locations has decreased.

In southern Valais, Grisons and Ticino, there are weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack. In these regions, avalanches may be triggered in places in the drifted snow of the last few days, and in some cases may also sweep away deeper layers of the snowpack. Isolated avalanches may also be triggered directly in deep layers, especially in the Engadine and south of there.

Gliding avalanches, some large, are still possible.

Weather review for Thursday

A little rain fell in the Jura during the night into Thursday. In the late morning, it was cloudy to very cloudy in the north and west, then increasingly sunny. It was mostly sunny in the south and east.

Light to moderate from the west, also from northerly directions in Ticino and Grisons.

OutlookSaturday

During the night to Saturday, there will be moderate southerly winds. These winds will be strong at times in the regions exposed to the foehn wind in the north. During the day it will be partly sunny in the north, and will become increasingly cloudy from the west in the afternoon. Cloud cover will be very heavy in the south.

At high altitudes and in the regions exposed to the foehn wind in the north, small snowdrift accumulations prone to triggering will tend to form. The danger of dry avalanches will increase somewhat here. Otherwise it will not change significantly.

The danger of moist avalanches will increase a little as the day progresses. There will also continue to be a possibility of isolated gliding avalanches.

Sunday

During the night to Sunday, a little snow will fall in the far west above 1500 m. During the day it will remain very cloudy on the northern flank of the Alps with some final precipitation. It will be quite sunny in the afternoon in Valais, Ticino and Grisons.

The danger of dry avalanches will not change significantly. Occasional gliding avalanches are still possible.
