Points saillants

Avalanches will be unlikely on Friday but there are still conditions to pay attention to. Observers have been finding weak snow layers in the top two feet of the snowpack on norhern and east facing slopes near and above treeline. If you have uncertainty in the snowpack, consider moving to terrain less than 30 degrees.

    There is a lot of variability associated with this problem. Two layers of buried surface hoar have been found (down 8" and down 18").  Mulitple layers of rounding facets have been found below old melt freeze crusts in the top two feet of the snowpack. Not all of these layers show up throughout the distribution of this problem. Snowpack testing has been variable. It is worth taking the time to check on the presence and condition of these weak layers before committing to northern and east facing slopes near and above treeline.

    On Thursday, observers did not find much evidence of wind slabs, but there could be some pockets of wind slab in isolated terrain. As you engage with lee slopes, check for signs of wind loading and monitor the depth of wind slabs. 

Avalanche Discussion

On Thursday a public observer reported signs of a previous small (D1) avalanche in the Todd Lake area on an east southeast slope around 6400'. The observed slab crown was 6-12" deep. Type and trigger are unknown.
