Points saillants

An upper level trough will continue to bring southwest flow to Mount Shasta through the day. Moderate southwest winds combined with 18 inches of new snow has created heightened avalanche danger on all aspects and elevations. Human triggered avalanches are very likely. Stepping back into terrain below 30 degrees will greatly mitigate today's hazards. Travel above treeline is not recommended.

    Moderate winds are the most conducive speeds to developing wind slabs. Combine the moderate wind with 18 inches of low density new snow, and you have a dangerous avalanche problem. Wind can deposit snow three to five times as fast as snow falling from the sky. These winds slabs can be found on any leeward aspect, primarily north and east facing terrain. Cross loading could be found on westerly terrain. Though these avalanches are specific to leeward aspects, they could be large and could bury you. Best bet is to steer clear of any leeward aspect avalanche terrain today.

    With 18 inches of new snow at treeline in the last 24 hours, storm slab will be a widespread problem today. Storm slabs are most prominent and sensitive during and right after storms. They are particularly touchy during periods of high snow accumulation, such as right now. These slabs will fail on the new snow old snow interface, breaking up to 18 inches deep. Storm slabs can be found anywhere new snow has fallen, this includes low elevation terrain fairly below treeline. These avalanches will be reactive to skis. 

Avalanche Discussion

Today will be a storm day in the Mount Shasta area. Cold temps, continued snowfall, and moderate winds will result in multiple dangerous avalanche problems. If you choose to go into the backcountry, expect touchy conditions. Bring a partner, double-check your equipment, and discuss a plan to mitigate your hazard while out in the field. Review the five red flags of snowpack instability.  Today is a great day to avoid all terrain above 30 degrees.
