Points saillants

Lingering, shallow slabs of wind-deposited snow remain a concern today on all aspects. Be wary of catchment areas near ridgelines and in confined couloirs. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully before committing to steep and exposed slopes.

    Shallow wind slabs ranging in sensitivity may be found in leeward catchment zones on all aspects. As winds shift back to the southwest today, it will be important to keep an eye out for continued slab development.  Be wary of steep slopes below ridgelines, in cross-loaded depressions, and confined couloirs. Blowing snow, recent drifting, and shooting cracks in stiff, upside-down snow will help you identify areas of greatest concern.  Sticking to lower-angled slopes in sheltered terrain will help you avoid this problem.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent field observations have reported several small wind slab avalanches and moderate amounts of loose snow available for transport. Thus far, the distribution of unstable wind deposits has been isolated, and the size of potential avalanches has been small. With increasing winds last night, it will be important to keep an eye out for continued slab development, particularly if winds outperform the forecast today.

A quick-moving storm system moves into the region tonight, bringing heavy mountain snowfall and increasing winds. Expect avalanche hazards to rise accordingly.
