Points saillants

 Avalanche danger has been on the decline, but triggering a slide that breaks 2-5 feet into buried layers, or a wind slab at high elevations, cannot be ruled out. Thin, rocky, and unsupported terrain is most suspect. Be wary of very steep terrain.

    While unlikely, the possibility of triggering an avalanche that fails 2-5 feet deep on buried weak layers cannot be ruled out. These weak layers exist on a variety of aspects but are most suspect on slopes facing north and east. Take this into account when assessing slopes and weigh the consequences in the event of an avalanche. Features such as gullies, trees, and rocks in the runout all increase the odds of an unfavorable outcome.

    This is the crown of an avalanche that happened 4 days ago in the Teton Zone. 

    With similar conditons to the Salt and Wyoming Ranges, this illustrates the persistent slab avalanche problem we are talking about.

    Despite fair weather, the possibility of triggering a wind slab at upper elevations in very steep terrain cannot be ruled out. These wind drifts will likely feel firm and could be hollow or drumlike. Very steep slopes below ridges, around cliffs, and in cross loaded gullies are most suspect.

    Very steep slopes at mid and upper elevations could warm quickly with inverted temperatures today. If you feel the snow warming or see roller balls, the surface could become unstable. This may produce small wet loose avalanches in certain locations, such as very steep areas with exposed rocks.

Avalanche Discussion

In the last two weeks, the mountain snowpack has run the gamut. We have seen Pacific Northwest style storms bringing rain into the upper elevations with temperatures that resemble mid May, followed by proper Wyoming cold with excellent powder riding. Winds have blown from most directions, affecting snow from every angle. While we have taken this in stride, the snowpack feels every subtle change and has been reeling from the roller coaster.

This unusual weather has created unique avalanche conditions that the snowpack is slowly recovering from. While we are enjoying the great surface conditions, layers beneath our feet are still adjusting. Because of this, caution on steep, avalanche prone slopes is still advised to allow the snowpack time to fully recover before really testing it.
