Points saillants

Generally safe avalanche conditions exist at all elevations. Increasing winds today may work to keep solar warming from becoming concerning however isolated areas of unstable snow still exist. LOW avalanche danger persists at all elevations. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully and identify features of concern.

    Cool temperatures and clear skies last night led to a hard refreeze and surface snow may take some time to soften today. Increasing westerly winds will also act to slow down the warming process in more exposed areas. while unlikely to be large today isolated areas of unstable snow may exist on solar aspects, particularly in areas near rock outcroppings, cliff bands, and tight couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified. Expect warming to be greater if the winds are less than forecasted. Wet, sticky snow surface, rollerballs and pinwheels, and increasing boot penetration are all signs of surface warming and may foreshadow larger point release avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

While generally, safe avalanche conditions exist today, it remains important for us to continue to use safe travel techniques and keep our eyes peeled for signs of isolated instabilities. As winds increase today it may be possible to find small pockets of fresh wind slab or if they turn out to be less than expected small loose wet avalanche may become more likely.  Be ready for variable surface conditions and bring the proper equipment for your objective, this may include boot and/or Ski crampons and an ice ax depending on your chosen venue.
