Wind slab avalanches up to a foot deep will be possible above treeline and may be sitting on top of a layer of buried surface hoar. This is the same layer that has been creating many avalanches in Turnagain Pass. For now there is much less snow over this weak layer so the avalanches will be smaller. It is possible on wind loaded slopes that these avalanches may be large enough to bury someone where the slab is deeper or if it is wider than expected.
Wind slabs are more common in steep terrain below ridgelines, rollovers (convexities), and in loaded gullies. Look out for shooting cracks, collapsing, and snow that becomes stiff underneath you. These are clues you are traveling on snow that has not bonded well to the old snow. The safest option is to look for slopes that are sheltered from the wind.
