Points saillants

Last nights storm favored the west slope of the Teton Range. At the upper elevations small pockets of wind slab could be triggered by skiers or riders who venture into steep avalanche terrain with fresh deposits of wind blown snow. The consequences of being caught in a slide present greater potential for injury due to the shallow snow cover. Avalanches are unlikely in terrain where last nights new snow accumulated on bare ground.

At the upper elevations southwest to west-northwest winds have formed small pockets of wind slab 8 to 16 inches in depth. These fresh slabs could be human triggered on old snow surfaces in steep wind loaded avalanche starting zones.

Avalanche Discussion

The interface between the recent new snow and the old snow will be a potential bed surface for fresh wind avalanche events. At the upper elevations pockets of wind slab up to 18 inches in depth could be human triggered in steep avalanche starting zones. These slab avalanches could injure or bury a person. Avalanches are not likely in areas where the recent new snow lies upon bare ground. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE at the upper elevations in the Teton area. A LOW avalanche hazard is expected in the other areas and below an elevation of 9,000 feet where the snowpack is still quite shallow.
