Avalanche Activity

SC 25.2.22 Unstable windslab in sheltered terrain, mainly NE to SE aspects above 900m, N and S also affected. Ava haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Moderately to weakly bonded windslab will persist in steep wind sheltered locations mainly on North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Moderately bonded deposits will also be present on North and South aspects and in other lee locations at lower altitudes. Newly formed cornices will remain fragile. Areas exposed to recent strong winds will be firm and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

By dawn, showers will die out and winds will ease. During the day the 500 metre freezing level will rise to 600 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Snow showers fell to all levels but eased mid morning. Much colder than of late with a temperature of -6 degrees celsius recorded at 930 metres. Winds were very strong, South-West becoming Westerly early afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: Moderately to weakly bonded windslab has developed in steep wind sheltered features on North to East aspects above 900 metres. Unstable cornices also continue to develop above these aspects. Pockets of windslab are also found in lee locations on other aspects and at lower altitudes. Windward aspects are windblown and stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
