Avalanche Activity

CM for 24/02/22 Unstable windslab and cornices, N-E-S aspects above 700m. Wind scoured terrain stable. Haz Considerable

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will continue to develop on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. The greatest accumulations will develop in wind sheltered areas and features such as coire rims, gully tops and below ridge crests. Fragile cornices will build on theses aspects. Other areas will be affected by cross-loading. Shallower accumulations of moderately bonded windslab will develop below 800 meters. Wind exposed locations will be stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Gale force winds from a mainly South-West to West South-West direction. Snowfall at all levels throughout the forecast period with the heaviest during the day. The freezing level will be around 300 meters.

Observed Weather Influences: Very strong winds from the West. Blustery snow showers at 800 metres. The freezing level was around the summits during the morning, then slowly dropped through the day.

ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is mostly stable below 800 meters. Glide cracks were observed below this altitude on steep convex terrain. As the freezing level dropped unstable windslab continued to build on North through East to South-East aspects above 850m. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
