Points saillants

With snow available for transport and shifting winds, riders have the highest risk of triggering a wind slab in steep and narrow concave slope features on all aspects near and above treeline. Appropriate terrain selection paired with minimal exposure and continual assessment of conditions will help mitigate consequential situations in the backcountry.

    Over the last 24 hours, winds have blown from all sides of the compass, with a predominant west, and northwest direction with light to moderate speeds. Areas where snow can become trapped like chutes, gullies, and concave pockets, will enhance the depth of a slab and is the result of cross-loading. Although these slabs are located in specific locations and some may be more reactive than others, the consequence of being involved would not be bright.

Avalanche Discussion

A low-probability, high-consequence avalanche danger involving wind-drifted snow near and above treeline remains the primary concern. Low danger does not mean no danger. It's vital to remain observant while traveling in the backcountry for changing conditions and clues to where instabilities lie. The goal of avoiding traumatic incidents rests within your competency as a backcountry traveler. Becoming complacent within the terrain, or ignorant of others' opinions can quickly lead to an unproductive backcountry experience. 

Five main red flags of avalanche danger:

  • Recent avalanches
  • Cracking, collapsing,
  • whumphing sounds
  • Strong winds and wind loading slopes
  • Heavy snowfall within the last 24 hours
  • Rapid temperature change
