Avalanche danger is LOW at all elevations. Monitor for signs of Wet Loose instabilities on all aspects near and below tree-line, and on solar aspects above tree-line.

    Temperatures are lower at most remote weather stations this morning. This suggests the possibility of a better re-freeze of the snow than yesterday at this time. High temperatures are forecast to be lower today with stronger winds, which may also moderate or slow day time softening of the snow surface to a degree. However, with several days of above average temperatures and strong sun, all solar aspects (E,SE,S,SW,W) should be treated as suspect areas to find unstable, wet-loose snow. Near and below tree-line all aspects should give you pause.

    It does remain possible to find unstable snow reactive to a human trigger on specific terrain features. Unsupportive snow the past couple days suggests this possibility. Continue to watch for warning signs such as increasing boot/ski penetration, rollerballs and pinwheels, and natural rock fall. Recent point release avalanches are the most obvious sign of unstable snow.

Avalanche Discussion

Careful attention to warming snow is very important today. LOW avalanche danger does not mean NO avalanche danger. Recent warm temperatures, little to no refreeze overnight and the resulting unsupportive snow is a red flag. The decision to drop the danger rating today is based on isolated recent avalanche activity and a more promising forecast today. Do not let your guard down, and contemplate consequence before exposing yourself to steep terrain as temperatures climb and the sun rises.

Beyond avalanche concerns, challenging travel is still on our radar. Firm and slick surfaces abound above tree-line, and there are is still plenty of three dimensional snow and thin cover areas to navigate as well. Recently the unsupportive, isothermal snow has provided another variable to consider. Keep your tips up and choose terrain carefully to manage these hazards. Don't forget to keep the sharp stuff like boot/ski crampons and ice axe/whippet close at hand for safe travel too. 

A quick change in the weather is forecast beginning tonight. Stronger winds, cooler temperatures and up to 1 foot of new snow will bring an abrupt change in conditions. Today’s snow surface could be tomorrow’s sliding surface for new snow instabilities. Take stock of coverage and adjust your mindset accordingly. Avalanche danger will rise again tomorrow with the arrival of this storm.
