Stars are still shining early this morning, none-the-less, a winter storm warning is in effect from 4am today to 4pm PST Sunday. In Mount Shasta City, 12 to 18 inches of snow is in the forecast over the next 36 hours. South to north, up slope flow will enhance precipitation intensity. Low avalanche danger will rapidly rise to moderate or considerable danger once the storm gets brewing. Existing snow surfaces are firm and variable. Temperatures are chilly and southwest wind will be moving snow around. Prepare the decks!

One thing is almost always certain for Mount Shasta: our friend, the wind. Southwest wind will increase today and blow 20-30 mi/hr over higher terrain with gusts higher. New snow and wind mean fresh wind slabs. New wind slabs are possible on cross-loaded west and east aspects and leeward northeast, north and northwest aspects. When it's snowing and blowing, stay vigilant. Today is that day. If you see wind blowing snow and notice cracking, blocking, hollow wind pillows or any other signs of wind deposited snow in avalanche terrain, you should proceed with caution. Use small, inconsequential slopes to test the waters. Start at the shallow end of the pool before you jump into the steep and deep.

If the weather forecast verifies, a foot or more of new snow is expected in the mountains over a short period of time. Existing snow surfaces are fairly smooth, with a widespread sun crust near and below treeline. Bonding of new snow onto old snow surfaces may be poor due to chilly temperatures. If and when six inches or more of fresh snow is observed, storm slabs could be possible. Ski cut results on small, inconsequential slopes or natural activity on indicator slopes are often the best clues that a storm slab problem exits.
