Points saillants

Swirling winds combined with recent snowfall have created wind slab problems throughout the BWRA. Wind-blown snow has been deposited on all aspects near and above the tree line.  Although winds are calming, some wind slabs remain sensitive and could possibly cause a  human-triggered avalanche.  Increase your safety margins by avoiding wind-drifted snow in steep terrain.

    The sensitivity and location of wind slabs is highly variable after the winds danced around the compass rose the last few days. Use your detective skills to avoid wind slabs today.  Look for clues in the snowpack to avoid this avalanche problem key in on snowdrifts and smooth and rounded deposits of wind-blown snow. Be mindful of areas where wind slabs typically form, gullies, just below ridgelines, and on convex and concave features.

    With calm winds and a drastic increase in daytime temperatures, slopes exposed to direct solar rays may see some instability, especially near rock outcrops and other features that can absorb solar input and influence the surrounding snowpack. Watch for roller balls, wet snow, and a change in boot or ski pen.
