Moderate avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area.

Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in extremely steep terrain. Even a snow slide can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack In particular on west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2200 m, weak layers exist relatively deep in the snowpack. On east and west facing slopes, during the mild periods in March these layers became thoroughly or partly moist up to high altitudes. During the colder period at the start of April, they froze at least to some extent and have therefore become more stable. In particular in Grisons and southern Valais, avalanches can still be triggered in deeper weak layers of the snowpack, as repeatedly demonstrated by a small number of avalanches. This applies in particular in areas where the snow cover is shallow and above approximately 2600 m. In addition, a weak layer still exists in the near-surface layers of the snowpack in some places. As the westerly wind strengthens, increasing amounts of both still loosely bonded snow on north facing slopes and fresh snow will be transported. In places where the snow drift accumulations form on a loosely bonded snow surface, in particular on north facing slopes, they are prone to triggering. In Lower Valais and on the northern Alpine ridge, the snow depths are slightly below average to average. In the other regions they are well below average for the time of year, including in the high Alpine regions. Observed weather review Monday, 10.04.2023 After a mostly clear night, it was mostly sunny during the day. As the day progressed, high-altitude cloud became denser from the west. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m: from +5 °C in Lower Valais and +3 °C on the northern flank of the Alps to 0 °C in Grisons and Ticino Wind Light to moderate from northerly directions Weather forecast through Tuesday, 11.04.2023 Monday night will be overcast. During the day it will be very cloudy in the north. A little precipitation will fall, chiefly on the northern flank of the Alps. It will be variably sunny in Engadine and fairly sunny on the southern flank of the Alps. Fresh snow The snowfall level will be between 2000 and 1600 m during the night before dropping to 1400 to 1600 m during the day. The following amounts of snow will fall by the afternoon:

• Northern flank of the Alps: 5 to 10 cm, but locally up to 20 cm
• Valais, northern and central Grisons: up to 5 cm
• Elsewhere: smaller amounts, none on the southern flank of the Alps

Temperature At midday at 2000 m: between -2 °C in the north and +2 °C in the south Wind Westerly wind:

• On the northern flank of the Alps and at elevated altitudes, moderate to strong
• Otherwise light to moderate

Outlook through Thursday, 13.04.2023 On Tuesday night a little precipitation will fall in the east. On Wednesday morning, further bright spells attributable to the foehn are to be expected in the north, and it will be cloudy in the south. In the afternoon, precipitation will quickly set in from the west. Thursday in the mountains will be mostly very cloudy with showers. On Wednesday night the snowfall level will drop below 1000 m. On the southern flank of the Alps it will be fairly sunny with a northerly wind. In the period to Thursday afternoon, 20 to 40 cm of fresh snow is to be expected at elevated altitudes on the northern flank of the Alps, in Valais and in Grisons over a wide area; smaller amounts are likely in Ticino. The avalanche danger will increase over a wide area from Wednesday afternoon.
