Points saillants

Inverted temperatures are in place with the mountains between 10 and 15 degrees warmer than the valleys. In steep, avalanche prone terrain above 8,000 feet, skiers and riders still have some potential to trigger small to large slab avalanches. As the day progresses, warming temperatures and sunshine will make these slabs more susceptible to failure, and shallow wet slides could occur on sunlit slopes. Small wet slides could also occur below 8,000 feet on sunlit aspects in the afternoon. Monitor warming temperatures and the sun’s impact on snow surfaces, and transition to shaded terrain when snow surfaces start to become damp.

    Slab avalanches with depths between one and three feet could be triggered by backcountry travelers above 8,000 feet. These slides are more likely in very steep chutes, cliff areas and beneath cornices. Below 8,000 feet, skiers and riders might be able to trigger isolated pockets of slab up to a foot in depth on very steep terrain features. Today's sunshine and rising temperatures will increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Cloud cover will dissipate overnight, and mostly sunny skies are in store for Saturday. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near zero before rebounding to around 30 degrees in the afternoon. After lows in the single digits, the valleys will climb into the upper 30s in the afternoon. Southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will ranged from 10 to20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate above 8,000 feet. In avalanche prone terrain, skiers and riders still have some potential to trigger slab avalanches with depths ranging from one to three feet. As the day progresses, warming temperatures and sunshine will make these slabs more susceptible to failure, and shallow wet slides could occur on sunlit slopes. Below 8,000 feet, the snowpack will be mostly stable in the morning before the chance for small wet slides develops on sunlit aspects in the afternoon. Monitor warming temperatures and the sun’s impact on snow surfaces, and transition to shaded terrain when snow surfaces start to become damp.
