Points saillants

New snowfall combined with south-southwest to west winds have formed small soft slabs in high elevation terrain. Backcountry travelers have some potential to trigger these slabs in terrain where the new snow has been visibly wind loaded on certain aspects. Even being caught by a very small avalanche can be season ending given the terrain hazards that protrude from and exist under the snow surface. The mid elevation snowpack is shallow and avalanches are unlikely. Low elevation terrain lacks significant coverage.

    In northwest to southeast terrain above 9500 feet, shallow wind slabs could be triggered in very steep terrain where new snow was deposited over lighter recent snow or surface hoar that lied upon hard old snow. These slabs could have depths to 10 inches.

Avalanche Discussion

Mountain showers are to diminish this evening before another cold front enters the area on Thursday. This system has little moisture with it so expect showery activity to bring another inch or two of snow to the mountains. High temperatures are to be in the low twenties and winds are to be westerly at 10-25 mph. The general avalanche hazard will be Low tomorrow throughout western Wyoming on Thursday. Isolated pockets of soft slab could be triggered in very steep wind loaded terrain features above 9000 feet. Slabs depths to a foot are possible and backcountry travelers should avoid these loaded features as even very small slides could sweep someone into exposed terrain hazards like rocks and stumps given the low snow depths. Avalanches between 7500 and 9000 feet are unlikely and terrain below 7500 lacks sufficient snow coverage for avalanches.
