Points saillants

The windslabs from strong winds and precipitation over the past few days are in the process of stabilizing, but they can still be triggered by a skier. Especially where they lie above a weak layer of faceted crystals that amplifies the wind slab problem.

In sheltered, shaded high-elevation basins, conditions are favorable for faceting high in the snowpack. This is caused by the interaction between dry and moist snow combined with clear weather. This can make the wind slabs more sensitive and easier to trigger.

In addition, there is an older layer of faceted crystals deeper in the snowpack that can be triggered if the load is large enough. Large avalanches caused by cornice falls over the past week have likely released on this layer. The cornices are generally large, and many of them can easily break under additional loading.

If the sun gains strength during the day, it may trigger wet loose avalanches.

Snowpack Structure

Nedbør og vind fra tidligere i uka har dannet fokksnøflak av varierende hardhet. Det finnes likevel myke flak eller løssnø som ligger oppå fuktig smelteomvandlet snø eller skare. Opp til ca. 500 moh er snøen fuktig, særlig i solvendte sider. Etter klarvær på natta før siste snøfall er det observert kantkorn under den ferskeste fokksnøen. Det er fortsatt værforhold for slik kantkornutvikling.

Kantkornlag dypt i snøen kan være mulig å påvirke i indre strøk, og der snødekket er tynt. Skred på disse lagene kan bli store. Sist observert mandag, sør for Storslett. Skavlbrudd eller mindre skred kan løse ut slike lag.

Fokksnøflakene fra sterk vind og nedbør de siste dagene er på vei mot stabilisering, men det er fortsatt mulig for en skiløper å påvirke dem. Særlig hvis de ligger over et svakt lag med kantkorn som forsterker fokksnøproblematikken.

I skjermede, skyggevendte botner i høyden er det forhold for kantkorndanning høyt i snødekket. Årsaken er møte mellom tørr og fuktig snø, kombinert med klarvær. Dette kan gjøre fokksnøen mer påvirkelig og lettere å løse ut.

I tillegg finnes et eldre kantkornlag dypere i snødekket som er mulig å påvirke dersom belastningen er stor nok. Store skred fra skavlbrudd den siste uken har trolig løsnet på dette laget. Skavlene er generelt store, og mange av dem kan lett knekke ved tilleggsbelastning.

Hvis sola får tak utover dagen, kan den løse ut våte løssnøskred.

Tendency

Sun, clear skies and easter holiday can increase risk taking and wanting go on big missions in the mountains. However, sun and rising daytime temperatures can trigger cornices and wet snow avalanches.

The cornices are large and have shown to trigger large avalanches when they collapse and trigger a persistent weak layer deeper in the snowpack. Throughout the week, both naturally and human triggered cornice fall avalanches is registered. Keep a safe distance!

At higher elevations windslab and facets are still present in isolated areas.
