Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind the prevalence of the avalanche prone locations will increase from the early morning.

Some snow will fall until the afternoon. The fresh snow as well as all the wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases. Especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls: The older wind slabs remain for the foreseeable future prone to triggering in particular on very steep shady slopes. The avalanche prone locations are covered with new snow and are difficult to recognise. Backcountry touring calls for careful route selection. On very steep slopes medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large natural avalanches are possible as a consequence of new snow and wind.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall on Sunday. Especially in the areas bordering Piedmont. The wind will be light to moderate adjacent to ridgelines. Above approximately 900 m snow will fall. Over a wide area new snow is lying on the soft surface of an old snowpack. Or on crusts. Towards its surface, the snowpack is weak in some cases; its surface consists of faceted crystals. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. Especially adjacent to ridgelines in all aspects: Over a wide area snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

The weather conditions will facilitate a gradual strengthening of the near-surface layers in particular on sunny slopes.
