Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche on weak snow buried near the ground. The most dangerous slopes face northerly and easterly where dense slabs up to four feet thick rest on top of the multiple weak layers. Some avalanches may break shallower in the snowpack, but if they break on weak layers near the ground, avalanches can become very large and inescapable. It is still possible to trigger avalanches from adjacent slopes and from below so plan your routes and safe spots accordingly. Cracking and collapsing may not be present before an avalanche breaks. Traveling on lower-angle or wind-sheltered terrain is safer.
