Points saillants

A foot of recent snow and very strong winds have created dangerous avalanche conditions. Triggering an avalanche large enough to bury a person is likely in steep, wind loaded terrain above 9,000’ today. New snow is also stressing buried weak layers increasing the chances of triggering a deeper avalanche. Additional snowfall will increase the avalanche danger as the day progresses. Conservative terrain selection and avoiding steep, wind loaded slopes is recommended today.

    Up to a foot of new snow has fallen over the past 48 hours in the Togwotee area. Strong winds out of the southwest have redistributed the recent snow and formed wind slabs 1-2 feet deep in loaded terrain. Depths could be as deep as 3 feet in heavily loaded areas along ridgelines and near the base of cliffs. These slabs will be hard in the upper elevations and softer below 9,000’. Triggering a wind slab will be likely in terrain steeper than about 35 degrees today, though slabs may be stubborn to initiate given the high wind speeds. Look for slab development further down and across slopes than normal. Cracking and recent avalanches are sure signs of instability within the recent snow, though these signs may not present themselves before triggering.

    An additional 3-6 inches of new snow accompanied by moderate to strong winds out of the southwest is expected today. Be on the lookout for newly forming slabs as the day progresses and remember that avalanches may break deeper than you expect given the recent snow totals.

    Weak layers of sugary facets exist in the middle of the snowpack and near the ground on most slopes. Avalanches involving these layers will be 2-3 feet deep, and up to 5 feet deep on heavily wind affected slopes. Triggering one of these dangerous avalanches is possible on very steep slopes over 35 degrees. Signs of instability such as cracking, collapsing, or recent avalanches may not be present before triggering a large avalanche capable of propagating long distances. Multiple tracks on a slope do not indicate stability with this problem type. Suspect terrain includes very steep, rocky, and/or wind affected slopes where thin spots exist making it possible for humans to impact buried weak layers.

    New snow and wind are stressing these buried weak layers and increasing the likelihood of triggering a persistent slab avalanche. Wind slabs triggered on the surface could step down to deeper weak layers resulting in a larger avalanche than expected.
