Avalanche Activity

In the late morning possibly danger level 3 (considerable) will be reached in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation.

New snow and wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant and reach large size in isolated cases. This applies in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas above the tree line, and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. Medium-sized natural avalanches are possible. Avalanche prone weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. These can in some places be released by small loads and reach large size in isolated cases. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate defensive route selection. Whumpfing sounds and the formation of shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack and natural avalanches serve as an alarm sign.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions 10 to 20 cm of snow has fallen. Over a wide area up to 40 cm of snow will fall. As a consequence of new snow and wind the wind slabs will increase in size. The wind slabs are lying on unfavourable layers. Precarious weak layers exist in the old snowpack.

Tendency

In some localities up to 10 cm of snow will fall.
