Avalanche Activity

GC28/2 Light snow showers. Old snow icy, localised windslab gully exits+ corrie rims NW to NE asp. 950+ Cornices fragile Mod. Hazard

Forecast Snow Stability: Stability will generally remain good with much of the existing snowpack firm and icy in exposed areas. Light showers of new snow will form localised areas of moderately bonded windslab in wind sheltered locations, greatest accumulations will be in summit gully exits and steep corrie rims with a North-West through North to North-Easterly aspect mainly above 950 metres. These accumulations are not expected to be deep or extensive. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very windy conditions from the South overnight will ease and veer becoming generally fresh to strong South-Westerly. Overnight the freezing level will briefly rise above the summits lowering through the day to 700 metres. A brief period of light to moderate snow overnight will be followed by light snow showers through the day. Observed Weather Influences: Mainly dry conditions today with fresh to strong Southerly winds. The freezing level was around 900 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack has a melt-freeze crust mainly above 800 metres and is very icy in exposed locations. At lower levels the snow cover becomes progressively more soft and moist. Stability is generally good on all but the steepest slopes where some minor surface instabilities exist. The avalanche hazard is Low.
