Avalanche Activity

LO for 8/1/22. Unstable windslab mainly on NW-N-E aspects above 900m. Instability during night below 900m. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Changing wind directions will result in unstable windslab on many aspects mainly above 900 metres. Greatest accumulations will be on North-West through North to East aspects and fragile cornices will be present above these aspects. There will also be a period of wet snow instability during the latter part of the night mainly on North to East aspects below 900 metres; stability here will improve during the day. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Moderate South-West winds backing South-South-East and become strong for a time overnight before veering South-Westerly and easing during the day. A dry evening followed by showers, falling as snow only above 900 metres for a period during the night but then to gradually lower levels through the day. The freezing level rises to 1100 metres overnight, then dropping to 600 metres by the end of the period. Observed Weather Influences: It was a cold day with snow showers and moderate West-South-Westerly winds ObservedSnowStability: Areas of moderately and poorly bonded windslab are present in wind sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations are on North to East aspects above 900m. Cornices also forming above these aspects. Aspects exposed to the wind are generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
