Avalanche Summary

Look for and avoid recently wind-loaded slopes. Slopes that face an east direction are where winds are drifting snow. This is also where weak layers are buried deep in the snowpack. An avalanche you trigger in drifted snow can break on deeper layers, resulting in a larger and more destructive avalanche. Besides avoiding drifted slopes, you can also reduce your risk of avalanches by avoiding steep slopes that are very rocky.
