Our Persistent weak layers have become very relaxed over the past few weeks, but winter has returned and we will want to pay close attention to what the incoming snow and wind do. Over the past week on slopes facing west through southeast at mid and upper elevations we have seen persistent slab avalanches failing naturally and triggered by humans 1-3' deep up to a football field wide. The ongoing challenge is, we are not seeing obvious red flags like collapsing and cracking that are typically associated with this problem, but digging down with your shovel or track it is easy to see the sugary facets underneath a cohesive, dense slab.
As we load up the persistent weak layers again, I am uncertain on how reactive they will become. I am still avoiding shallower areas of the snowpack less than 150cm deep along with steep, rocky areas where I am more likely to trigger this lingering problem. It is becoming tougher to hold-out as spring approaches, but I am still avoiding slopes with this avalanche problem and practicing patience as every slope will have its day, but some times we just have to wait to play.
This avalanche failed at 11,100' on a northwest slope off East Lofty Peak above Cutthroat lake, in a shallower area of the snowpack, around 130cm. This avalanche was near 1,000' wide, 1-3' deep and broke to the ground during our last avalanche and storm cycle, and looked to be triggered by a sledder mid-slope.
