Points saillants

Another warm sunny day brings concerns of wet snow avalanches. Firm snow in the morning will transition to wet snow as it warms throughout the day. If snow surfaces become wet and unsupportable avoid steep consequential terrain that would amplify the consequences if a slide were to occur.

    Direct solar input and a poor overnight refreeze will create conditions for  wet loose avalanches to occur, but they are unlikely to be large enough to bury a person.  The best way to mitigate concerns with warming snow is timing. Get out early, bring ski crampons and move uphill as conditions are firmer, as snow surfaces warm avoid being under or on steep slopes during the hottest part of the day. Watch for roller balls, wet snow and punchy snow. If snow becomes unsupportable, move to lower angle terrain or change aspects.

Avalanche Discussion

The recent weather pattern has consisted of warm days and cool nights resulting in a decent refreeze where snow still exists at higher elevations. No reports of wet avalanches have been reported. What we have seen is low snow levels, open creeks, and plenty of obstacles to avoid. Be mindful of your backcountry travel plans as snow depth looks more like May than March at the moment.Although a wet loose avalanche may not be big enough to bury a person, evaluate the terrain and consequences below you. A small wet snow avalanche or an icy patch can cause you to lose control and be swept into obstacles. Looking at  the week ahead there does look like a chance for some high elevation snow to arrive mid week.
