Avalanche Activity

SC 09.04 Unstable windslab in wind sheltered terrain on SE to SW aspects above 900m, minor amounts on E aspects. Aval haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Drifting and new snowfall will see new unstable deposits developing on East aspects with deeper areas of windslab persisting on South-East to South-West aspects above 900 metres. Greatest amounts will be found in wind sheltered terrain with stability poorest particularly around gully tops, scarp slopes and on steep convex features. Elsewhere, there will be drifts to low levels with older snow very firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Remaining cold with snow showers, mainly in the afternoon above 500 metres. Strong winds throughout, mostly North-West during the day. Observed Weather Influences: A covering of snow at all levels with further snow showers during the day. Winds were strong from the North-North-West. ObservedSnowStability: Localised accumulations of unstable windslab are to be found in wind sheltered locations on South-East to South-West aspects above 900 metres. Poorest stability was observed on steep terrain. Isolated deeper drifts were also found in lee locations at lower levels. Elsewhere, wind exposed terrain is scoured with old snow very firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
