New wind slabs are expected to form throughout the day, assess for wind slabs in exposed terrain.

The best and safest riding will be on slopes that have soft snow without any slab properties.

Strong wind is expected to redistribute snow into wind slabs on north and east aspects. Strong wind speeds mean that wind slabs could be found further down slope than expected.

Confidence

Moderate

  • Uncertainty is due to the speed, direction, or duration of the wind and its effect on the snowpack.
  • Uncertainty is due to the limited number of field observations.

Snowpack Summary

Surface snow will likely be redistributed into small wind slabs on north and east facing terrain during the day on Sunday.

A prominent crust, formed in mid-December, is now buried between 60 and 100 cm deep. This crust extends up to 1800 m near the Pine Pass area.

In thin snowpack areas, faceted grains or depth hoar may exist at the base of the snowpack.
