Points saillants

Avalanche size could increase with elevation on Monday. Here, wind slabs could be thicker and wider, and loose slides could run further. Steer around slopes of increased consequences, especially those that are very steep and planer.

    Slabs created the past few days are beginning to get hidden under newly fallen snow without wind. You may need to feel for stiffer, cohesive snow carefully to identify areas of concern. In any case, avalanches could be thicker and above treeline on exposed slopes, near ridges and cornices. Pay attention to signs of instability such as shooting cracks and recent avalanches if you see them. The new snow should be 'healing' more on Monday, but that doesn't mean you couldn't trigger a large slab in these isolated areas.

    Small loose avalanches should be expected within the new snow. These could take on many forms on Monday, from completely dry snow, to moist heavier snow that entrains and packs more of a punch. Look for other recent point releases as a clue, and test steep slopes as the day progresses. The sun may quickly change snow surfaces and lead to increased actvity with moistening snow in the afternoon, so stay alert.

Avalanche Discussion

Observers reported widespread loose dry, or point release avalanches on Sunday along with many wind affected slopes. On Saturday, there was a round of small storm and wind driven avalanches. Folks reported finding wide but small natural avalanches in the SPMR backcountry, and were able to ski trigger small wind slabs mid-day. SPMR reported many small storm and wind slabs with control work that morning. Down at Snoqualmie Pass, many human triggered avalanches have been reported, most seemingly running at or just above the old/new interface, often a crust. 

This past week an easterly wind event damaged old snow surfaces and, the day of created reactive wind slab. The new snow/ old snow interface is a mixed bag of firm but rough sun crusts, soft wind etched or stiff wind board snow.
