Points saillants

Shallow avalanches will be possible on North and East slopes at and above treeline.  These will be Wind Slab avalanches created when the wind blows the new snow onto lee slopes.  Avalanche danger won't reach Moderate levels until late in the afternoon or whenever the depth of new snow reaches 3-4 inches.

    I hesitate to include this problem at all because it will only become significant late in the afternoon.  Nonetheless if you are getting ready to make your last turns late in the day, down a steep, wind loaded slope, know that you could trigger a shallow wind slab.  Wind deposited snow can be 3-5 times as deep as the snow in areas not affected by the wind.  This is a very handy number to remember both when you are trying to assess/avoid a wind slab problem, as well as when the new snow is very shallow and you're trying to avoid the bad snow beneath.

Avalanche Discussion

Our winter has sure been dynamic, with lots of fresh snow, immediately followed by a deluge and then very warm temperatures.  We got our first glimpse of the mountains today and could see some avalanche debris left by wet slides at least as big as size 3.  There was a particularly large avalanche (or avalanches) on the Prouty glacier of South Sister.  By Wednesday evening we should start a healthy refresh of new snow.  As that new snow starts to pile up, remember that there isn't much old snow underneath.  Early season condtions will persist for the near future with lots of rocks, stumps and logs near the surface.  I am optimistic that all that rain and warm temperature had a significant impact on the faceted layers above the ground, and hopefully once winter begins again in earnest, they won't continue to plague us.
