Points saillants

The avalanche danger is Considerable at all elevations today. Dangerous conditions exist. Warm overnight temperatures combined with poor snowpack structure are making wet loose avalanches likely and wet slab avalanches possible. Cornice falls are also a possibility today. Natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are likely. Be aware of terrain above you, as avalanches will have the potential to run through multiple elevation bands. Weak unsupportable snow will make travel difficult in the mountains today.

    Wet loose avalanches will be likely in steep terrain today. These may occur naturally and will be easily triggered by skiers and riders. Two consecutive nights of minimal to no freezing in the mountains have created conditions ripe for triggering avalanches. The likelihood of triggering will increase as temperatures rise and the sun impacts snow surfaces. These avalanches have the potential to gouge down into deeper weak layers and entrain significant amounts of snow.

    Weak layers that formed in January and February sit below slabs that have formed in March. These weak layers and slabs have become saturated with water in many locations and hold the potential to produce large and destructive avalanches. Slab depths are in the 1-2 foot range and have the potential to gouge into deeper weak layers. In the higher elevations slab avalanches may initially be dry but will become wet while moving downslope.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Sky cover will slightly decrease by morning and lead to partly cloudy skies. Overnight temperatures at 9,000 ft will be in the mid-thirties. Tomorrow will be the warmest day of the weekend with highs in the fifties possible at upper elevations. Winds will veer to the southwest at speeds of 15-20mph.Without a freeze tonight the snowpack tomorrow will be generally weak due to wet, cohesionless snow. The snowpack will be isothermal in shallower locations at low and mid elevations. As the buried persistent weak layer becomes affected with free water, slabs may release easier and unexpectedly. These types of avalanches can run long distances and well into lower elevations and across low angle terrain. Human triggered wet avalanches will be likely tomorrow and natural avalanches will be possible. The avalanche danger will be Considerable on all aspects at all elevations throughout the forecast areas.
