Points saillants

The season opening storm should arrive early afternoon today, so expect LOW avalanche danger for most of the daylight hours. The avalanche danger will rise quickly late this afternoon and into the night, following the storm onset. Slopes with existing snow on the ground is the most likely terrain for avalanche problems. Precipitation amounts are impressive and rapid snow accumulation is certain. Snow will be measured in feet. South/southwest wind will howl. While powder hounds are foaming at the mouth, backcountry access will be difficult. This storm might be a good one to wait out, let things settle a bit, and allow hard obstacles to be laid to rest for the winter.

    Storm slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. As new snow begins to pile up, this avalanche problem will be a concern, most notably where existing snow remains from our early season storms. Terrain near and above treeline and sheltered from the wind will be the most likely areas to encounter this avalanche concern.

    After the storm onset, expect wind blowing snow and wind slabs to begin to form. South/southwest wind will move snow around effectively, loading W/NW/N/NE/E/SE facing slopes. Places where existing snow remains should be most suspect. Wind slabs are the release of a cohesive slab of snow formed by the wind. Wind transports snow from the upwind side of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and can sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard.

These are all free, and you do not need to sign up, just show up! Donations gladly accepted. If the gate is closed this weekend up to Bunny Flat, we will instead be holding this clinic next to the baseball field above Sisson Middle School in Mt. Shasta City, near the cross streets of Rockfellow and Lake Street. Next weekend, don't miss out on our Community Movie Night.

A reminder that the Siskiyou County road crew, during large storms, will often close the gate at McBride Springs along the Everitt Memorial Highway. This is likely the case this weekend.
