Points saillants

Avalanche danger wil increase on leeward terrain as the snow accumulation increases. Sustained moderate winds will be building wind slabs through the night and into Friday, primarily on north through east aspects. Use carefull snowpack evaluation, cautious route-finding, and conservative decision making where you encounter the wind slab problem.

    As the temperature drops, new incoming snow will be low density by Central Oregon standards and easily moved by the wind. Wind slabs forming over unconsolidated snow will be especially sensitive to triggering. The potential for wind slab avalanches to become large exists in select pockets of terrain.

    Wind slabs often form below ridge tops, high points, and around featurs that catch blowing snow. Look for visual signs such as pillows of wind difted snow, and a wavy or uneven surface texture to indicate a surface may be wind loaded. Recently formed cornices can also be clues that wind slabs are present.

    If you encounter signs of windloaded snow or observe cracking in the surface slab, move to lower angle slopes under 30 degrees.

    Cold light powder will make the skiing and riding good on Friday. Along with blower pow, comes the potential for unconsolidated snow to spill down hill. Loose-dry avalanches start at a point and entrain snow as they move downhill, forming a fan-shaped avalanche. Although Loose dry avalanches will be on the small side, watch for these in steep terrain or around terrain traps. Loose snow avalanches can knock a person off their stance and can have consequence in steep terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

The storm activity backed off on Wednesday and gave the snowpack time to settle. Storm related avalanche problems from the previous storms largely subsided, but as we move into Friday it is a new day and avalanche danger will increase. 

During the previous storm cycle, reports of storm and wind slab avalanches came in although the last few days have been quiet in terms of avalanche activity. Here in Central Oregon, our increase in avalance danger comes on quick with building storms. Currently we lack persistent weak layers in the snowpack, and therefore our avalanche danger typically subsides within days after major storm activity. Do not get lulled into complacency as storm related problems come and go.
