Points saillants

A MODERATE danger exists on upper elevation north, east and south-facing terrain for triggering a sensitive slab of wind drifted snow up to 2' deep.

At all other elevations, the avalanche danger is LOW. Below 8500' small, wet-loose avalanches are possible on southeast through west-facing terrain if the sun comes out today.

Continue to evaluate snow and terrain carefully.

Sensitive wind drifts remain at the upper elevations. These wind drifts sit on top of weaker snow, that is resting on top of the stout February 7th crust. These avalanches can be triggered remotely, and the structure may allow a rider to get well onto a slope before it fractures.

Avoid any wind-drifted slope on terrain steeper than 30 degrees. Signs of wind-drifting include denser pillows of snow or textured snow.

Recent Activity

Yesterday, no new avalanches were triggered in the backcountry. Control work is still producing both hard and soft slab avalanches in isolated terrain in ski resorts.

Snow and Weather

This morning, temperatures range through the upper 20's and low 30's F, with a temperature inversion at some low-elevation trailheads with temperatures in the low 20's F. Winds are westerly and generally light averaging 1-10 mph with gusts up to 18 mph.

Today, the high pressure system will gradually shift east. This will bring mostly cloudy skies and warm temperatures, in the upper 30s to low 40s F. Winds will continue to be west southwesterly and average 5-15 mph with gusts below 25 mph at mid-elevations. Upper elevation ridgelines will average 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Looking forward, a storm system will be tracking south of us tonight and could bring a trace amount of snow to the Ogden area mountains.
