Snowpack

The new snow and snowdrift were deposited on a very variable snowpack in the north. Particularly in places that are protected from the wind, the old snow surface had become faceted or there was surface hoar (hoar frost). The avalanche danger will decrease only slowly in these places. Adjacent to ridgelines, the old snowpack was strongly influenced by the wind and irregular. The connection between the new snow and snowdrift and the old snowpack should be better there. There is only a little snow on the southern flank of the Alps and in southern Grisons.

In the central part of the snowpack, the Northern Alpine Ridge, Valais, the Gotthard region, northern and central Grisons and Engadine have some weak layers in the area of melt-freeze crusts.

Westerly to northerly winds, partly moderate during the night, mostly weak during the day

Weather review for Sunday

It was mostly very cloudy in the north. Snow fell down to low altitudes, with the snowfall ending from the west as the day progressed. There were then brighter spells in the west. It was quite sunny and dry in the south.

Fresh snow

The following amounts of snow have fallen since Saturday:

• Western Jura, extreme west of Lower Valais, northern flank of the Alps, northern Grisons, Lower Engadine: 10 to 20 cm
• Rest of Valais, northern Ticino, central Grisons: 5 to 10 cm, with areas further south seeing only a few centimetres of snow or remaining dry.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between -7 °C in the north and -2 °C in the south.

Wind

Moderate wind in the east and south, occasionally strong westerly to northwesterly wind at higher altitudes; mostly light to moderate wind in the western regions

OutlookTuesday and Wednesday

It will remain sunny and mild on Tuesday. On Wednesday it will be mostly cloudy but dry in the west and north. It will be quite sunny in the southeast. The danger of dry avalanches will slowly decrease. Gliding snow slides are possible on steep meadow slopes and isolated moist loose snow slides on steep sunny slopes.
