Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence.

Over a wide area up to 50 cm of snow has fallen above approximately 1900 m. The strong wind has transported a lot of snow. In the last three days large surface-area wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines. The fresh wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant at elevated altitudes. At high altitude and in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow can be released by a single winter sport participant in particular on steep shady slopes. Over a wide area new snow is lying on a weakly bonded old snowpack. As a consequence of a sometimes strong wind, easily released wind slabs formed. Gliding avalanches are possible below approximately 1700 m.
