Points saillants

Small, loose snow avalanches are not out of the question in steep unsupported terrain. Increasing easterly winds in the afternoon may be enough to redistribute the recent snow into shallow drifts high in the alpine. Conditions may be challenging on steep slopes, with a slippery crust under the shallow new snow.

    You may be able to trigger small loose snow avalanches in steep, unsupported terrain Saturday. Throughout most of the zone, a few inches of recent low-density snow rests atop a firm and slick crust formed earlier in the week. Although loose snow avalanches may not be big enough to bury you, they could run far and fast downslope or knock you off your feet. Even a small avalanche could have high consequences in extreme terrain. Also, keep an eye on steep sun-exposed slopes where loose avalanche activity could take on a wetter character. Look for rollerballs and pinwheels as a sign of weakening snow surfaces.

Avalanche Discussion

The early season snowpack that was looking healthy for November has shrunk down in early December and melted quite a bit, so early-season hazards should be expected. Keep an eye out for open creeks, talus fields, buried logs, and small trees. If you venture high into the alpine, look for recent deposits of wind-blown snow primarily on north through east aspects near ridge crests, in gullies, and in unsupported terrain. Easterly winds may increase throughout the day Saturday and could be enough to drift recent snow into shallow slabs in leeward terrain. Expect more clouds in the afternoon ahead of an incoming storm Sunday that should bring a round of cold snowfall and an uptick in avalanche danger. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
