The danger is MODERATE above 2500' for Persistent Slab avalanches. The danger is LOW below 2500'.

Your odds of triggering an avalanche are lower on slopes with deep, uniform snow coverage. However, you could trigger a slide from lower on the slope or along its edges, where snow depth is shallower and more variable.

Look for and avoid steep, wind-affected, rocky slopes or places where you suspect the snowpack depth to be shallow.

    You are most likely to find trouble on shallow, wind-affected, rocky slopes with a variable snowpack depth. Unfortunately, many slopes around Hatcher Pass currently match this description. This means you may encounter this problem in surprising places, and you could trigger slides from shallow spots on an otherwise well-covered slope. 

    Look for and avoid steep, wind-affected, rocky slopes, or places where you suspect the snowpack depth to be variable. Instead, seek slopes that appear to have uniformly deep snow coverage. You can further hedge your bets by digging down to assess for weak snow near the ground, selecting slopes with clean runouts, and skiing or riding slopes one at a time.

    Hatcher Pass still has an overall shallow snowpack. Even a small avalanche could have heightened consequences, dragging you into or over rocks and into terrain traps such as drainages.

Avalanche Discussion

Looking ahead into the work week, a quick-moving storm could bring snow to Hatcher Pass beginning late tonight. Snowfall is expected to be on the lower end through today and Monday. Snowshowers should intensify late Monday night through Tuesday. Models are still not in total agreement with the amount of snowfall expected through Tuesday. As snow begins to fall, think about the following if you ski or ride during or immediately following this incoming storm: 

  • Is the wind moving snow around building drifts, or adding more weight to the snowpack? 
  • If the wind is moving snow, are there signs of recent wind loading on this slope, i.e., freshly formed cornices, dunes, or pillows of snow, or a textured snow surface?

If the answer is yes to any of the above, you could trigger an avalanche either in the newly wind-drifted snow or deeper in the snowpack on buried weak layers. Approach these slopes with a degree of hesitancy, and maybe consider choosing an alternative route. We will update this product by Friday, January 30th, or as conditions warrant. 

 

RECENT AVALANCHES:

On Saturday, 1/17, a party triggered a small slide on the north side of 4068. On Sunday, 1/18, another party remotely triggered a larger avalanche adjacent to $1000 Run while traversing Hatch Peak ridge (see photo below). Head over to the observation page to see all recent observations.
