In high Alpine regions a considerable avalanche danger will be encountered in some regions.

Snowpack

Between Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon, precipitation is anticipated over widepspread areas, most of which will fall during Monday night in the southern regions. The snowfall level is expected to descend from 2500 m down to 1800 m in the western and the northern regions, and in the southeastern regions from 2800 m down to 2200 m. As a consequence of strong-velocity southwesterly to northwesterly winds, snowdrift accumulations will be generated which are prone to triggering. The fresh fallen snow in the high alpine regions and on the glaciers, and also in north-facing gullies and bowls above approximately 2800 m, will be deposited on a thin, continuous snow cover. In the Bernina region in the high alpine zones there is already a thick snowpack. In high alpine regions the conditions are wintery.

Outlook through Thursday, 02.11.2023

On Wednesday in the northern regions it will be partly sunny, during the course of the day skies will become increasingly overcast from the west. In the southern regions it will be predominantly overcast. During the nocturnal hours on Wednesday, light precipitation is anticipated in the western and the southern regions which subsequently will increase in intensity during the course of the day on Thursday. The snowfall level will lie at 1800 m, and on Thursday will ascend to approximately 2400 m. At elevated altitudes, a moderate to strong-velocity southwesterly wind will be blowing, intensifying in some places on Thursday to strong-to-storm strength. Avalanche danger levels will decrease gradually to begin with, however on Thursday avalanche danger will increase again from region to region. The avalanche situation in the high alpine regions is wintery.
