Avalanche Activity

TO for 23/12. Fresh unstable windslab mainly on E-S aspects above 900m Cornices! Wet snow instabilities during day. Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will continue to develop through the evening mainly on East to South aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices will develop above these aspects. Other aspects will generally be scoured with limited snow cover. During the day there will be a period of reduced stability as wet snow instabilities develop in all recent snow accumulations. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: North-Westerly gales back to the South-West and ease, to become moderate by dawn, increasing to strong in the afternoon. Snow showers in the evening followed by dry weather overnight with further showers during the day soon turning to rain at all elevations. The freezing level will be around 500 metres overnight rising rapidly to above summit level during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Storm force North-Westerly winds and heavy showers, falling as snow above around 600 metres. The freezing level rose to around 800 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of poorly bonded windslab are present mainly on East to South aspects above 900 metres. Features such as gully tops, corrie rims and ridge flanks are most affected. Fragile cornices are present above these aspects. Aspects exposed to the strong winds are scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
