Points saillants

Northerly wind continues to bring arctic air into the Mount Shasta region. Recreators should prepare for wind chill values of -20 F or lower above treeline. Firm and icy surface conditions can be found on all aspects and elevations. Avalanches remain unlikely, and normal caution is recommended for travel in the backcountry. Precipitation appears likely for the end of the week.

Most snow on Mount Shasta is glued in by a very firm surface crust. However, the small amount of loose snow that can be transported could develop wind slabs in isolated southerly slopes. These wind slabs could be reactive with skis or crampons and carry you into unforgiving terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Normal caution is advised for today. Northerly winds have potential for blowing snow, however the widespread firm surface conditions leave not much snow to transport. If you choose to go in the backcountry, remember, low danger does not mean no danger. Keep your eyes peeled for signs of instability. Above treeline, look out for isolated wind slab development on southerly slopes. With these cold conditions, periodically check on your partner(s) for signs of cold injuries or frostbite. Crampons and ice axe are highly recommended for any steep slopes above treeline.
