Upper-elevation slopes may harbor weaker snow around a rain crust buried one to two feet deep. The hardness and thickness of the rain crust varies with elevation, and these weak snow grains have been stubborn to fail in snowpack tests. On slopes where the crust in thinner and more breakable, cohesive slabs sitting above have better odds to fail from the added weight of a rider or machine. If you see cracking in the snow or hear a rumbling collapse, you're likely on a slope with a stiff over soft combination and should consider recreating on a different slope. Even small avalanches in complex terrain can have big consequences.
