Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and weakly bonded old snow require caution.

Weakly bonded old snow is to be evaluated with care and prudence. These avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in northwest to north to northeast facing aspects. Caution is to be exercised in particular on very steep shady slopes above the tree line, as well as at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. The wind slabs can be released, especially by large additional loads, in particular on west to north to east facing aspects above the tree line. Avalanches can also release deeper layers of the snowpack and reach quite a large size. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation individual mostly small moist loose snow slides are possible. This applies on very steep slopes at the base of rock walls.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of a sometimes strong wind from variable directions, sometimes avalanche prone wind slabs formed in the last few days. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. Distinct weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on steep shady slopes. This applies especially above approximately 2000 m.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist.
