Storm snow continues to accumulate atop a widespread crust. Avoid avalanche terrain during periods of heavy snow and/or strong wind.

Snow since the weekend continues to accumulate atop a widespread crust. Expect slabs to be larger and more likely in wind-loaded terrain.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain due to a limited number of field observations.
  • We are confident the likelihood of avalanches will increase with the forecast weather.

Avalanche Summary

We do not have any recent reports of avalanches, but suspect recent avalanche activity has occurred during periods of rapid loading from heavy snow and/or wind transport.

If you are heading into the backcountry, please share any observations with the Mountain Information Network.

Snowpack Summary

Roughly 50 cm of new snow since the weekend has accumulated along with southwesterly alpine winds. The snow overlies a crust from last Saturday's rain that is likely present at most elevations, except possibly in isolated high alpine areas.

On north aspects, 80 to 150 cm below the surface, two persistent weak layers exist (buried in late January and early February) and contain weak facets over a crust. It remains uncertain whether the recent warm conditions had any stabilizing effect on the reactivity of these layers.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for fresh storm slabs building throughout the day.
  • Avoid freshly wind-loaded terrain features.
  • Storm slabs in motion may step down to deeper layers resulting in large avalanches.
