Avalanche Activity

SC 10.01.23 Initially new windslab developing, becoming increasingly unstable in afternoon. Avalanche hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: New windslab will develop, mainly above 800 metres in wind sheltered locations on North-West to North-East aspects. West and East aspects will also be affected by localised new accumulations. As the freezing level rises, new accumulations will become increasingly unstable with wet snow instabilities developing in these same locations. Cornices will also become increasingly unstable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will drop to around 600 metres overnight with snow showers arriving in the morning. As freezing levels rise in the afternoon to above the summits, snowfall will turn to rain at all levels. Winds will be moderate, Southerly first thing but quickly veering to the South-South-East for most of the day. Observed Weather Influences: A bright morning, becoming cloudy early afternoon with light snowfall above 800 metres. Winds were fresh from the North-West. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is soft at lower levels becoming very firm above 900 metres and is generally well bonded in all locations. Greatest amounts of snow are to be found on North-West to North-East aspects, patchy elsewhere. Exposed slopes are very icy. The avalanche hazard is Low.
