Snowpack

In the south and west, the large amounts of new snow that have fallen over the the past week have rapidly stabilised. The wind slabs that formed on Sunday with the strong southerly winds are prone to triggering in some places in these regions. Small wind slabs have also formed on shady slopes in some places in other regions.

Even though no dry avalanches triggered by human activity have been reported for some time, the snowpack in the inneralpine regions of Grisons still contains weak layers. When it initially becomes moist, it loses its strength and cracks in the old snowpack become possible again. This currently mainly affects northern slopes in the range of around 2200 to 2600 m.

The snowpack is water-saturated on southern slopes up to the high alpine regions and on eastern and western slopes upto around 2800 m. On northern slopes, most of the old snowpack is water-saturated up to around 2400 m.

Monday night into Tuesday will be mostly clear in the south and partly cloudy elsewhere. During the day it will be quite sunny in the south and inneralpine regions, while in the north it will often be cloudy with isolated showers in the afternoon.

Weather review for Monday

There was still little snowfall in the south on Sunday evening. The night was often clear, while during the day it was initially quite sunny. In the middle of the day, dense clouds rolled in from the west.

From Sunday afternoon to Sunday evening above 2000 m:

• Main Alpine Ridge from southern Goms to the Bernina Pass and south of it: 5 to 10 cm

OutlookWednesday

Tuesday night into Wednesday will be mostly overcast. In the late morning it will be sunny in some places, in the afternoon very cloudy with isolated showers. The snowfall level will be around 2200 m.

The risk of dry avalanches will continue to decrease, Wet and gliding avalanches are to be expected, especially as the day progresses.

Thursday

There will be widespread precipitation on Thursday. The snowfall level will drop from 2000 m to 1600 m. In the north, 10 to 20 cm of fresh snow is expected over a wide area and up to 30 cm on the central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps. In the south it will be sunny during the day with a strong to storm force northerly wind.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase in the north as a result of the new fallen snow. Wet and gliding avalanches are to be expected with the rain, especially in the west at intermediate altitudes. In the south, the danger of dry avalanches will probably not change significantly, but the danger of wet and gliding avalanches will increase during the course of the day.
