Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs: From starting zones at higher altitudes large and, in many cases, very large avalanches are to be expected.

Over a wide area 90 to 150 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Wednesday above approximately 2500 m. Above approximately 2300 m: In particular on steep northwest, north and northeast facing slopes numerous large to very large dry and moist avalanches are to be expected. From starting zones that have retained some snow the avalanches can in many cases reach an unusually long way and in some places endanger transportation routes, including those situated at relatively low altitudes. The weather will be mostly sunny. The weather conditions will bring about a substantial rise in the danger of moist and wet avalanches as the day progresses. It is inadvisable to engage in backcountry touring.

Snowpack Structure

As a consequence of new snow and a strong southeasterly wind, large wind slabs formed above the tree line. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the old snowpack at elevated altitudes. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as south and east facing slopes: Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on a moist old snowpack. The sleet gave rise to significant moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2400 m.

Tendency

The weather conditions will facilitate a gradual strengthening of the snowpack in particular at intermediate altitudes.
