SC 03.04 Minor surface instability on steep ground - SE to SW aspects above 950m. Thaw conditions developing. Avalanche hazard Low.

Forecast Snow Stability: As thaw conditions become established, minor surface instabilities will be demonstrated on the steepest of ground, in the recent accumulations on South-East to South-West aspects above 950 metres. Elsewhere the snow will be well bonded and stable with recent shallow, soft accumulations thawing rapidly in the mild and wet conditions. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Cloudy but dry conditions overnight and through the morning, with very light snowfall above 800 metres arriving by mid-afternoon. This will rapidly turn to sleet and then rain at all levels as the freezing level rises above the summits. Light Northerly winds overnight, backing as they increase to become gale force West-South-Westerlies by the end of the forecast period. Observed Weather Influences: Light snowfall overnight to glen level. Mainly dry during the day with the occasional very light snow shower. Very light variable winds. Freezing level around 900 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Isolated accumulations of moderately bonded windslab are present in wind sheltered locations on South-East to South-West aspects above 950 metres. These deposits are mainly to be found in the highest mountains along the Northern boundary of the forecast area. Firm, old snow-ice is present on high plateau areas and in high North to East facing corries. Elsewhere a light covering of new soft snow lies mainly over bare ground above 700 metres. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
