Shady slopes as well as wind-loaded slopes: The snowpack is largely stable. On extremely steep grassy slopes and on sunny slopes more gliding avalanches and moist snow slides are possible as the day progresses, even medium-sized ones. Areas with glide cracks are to be avoided. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

The somewhat older wind slabs have bonded quite well with the old snowpack also on shady slopes. Shady slopes and intermediate and high altitudes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals and its surface has a crust that is not capable of bearing a load. Steep sunny slopes: The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften during the day. Above the tree line there are 30 to 50 cm of snow, and even more in some localities. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. At low altitude hardly any snow is lying.
